Classes for young printmakers

Introduction to Screenprinting on Fabric (13-17 yrs) with Sarah Walker

Day + date: School holiday class 10am Ð 1pm, 7 Ð 11 July

Looking for something to do in the July school break? Then why not learn to screen print on fabric at Megalo. Experienced textiles teacher Sarah Walker will guide students through simple design and stencil development as well as printing techniques. You could have made your own one-off designer t-shirt by the end of the week!

Exploring Printmaking + other Inky Creatures with Antonia Aitken (9-12 years)

Day + date: Saturday mornings 10am Ð 1pm, 26 July Ð 6 September

Course fee: $255

These fun and explorative Saturday sessions will introduce the printmaking mediums of lino-cutting, mono-printing, contact printing, dry-point etching and stencil screen printing. Work in the Megalo print studios with artist Antonia Aitken and adventure into the exciting world of printmaking where real and imaginary creatures will ink their way onto your paper.

Print Sampler: 3-in-1

Print Sampler Ð Screenprinting, Etching + Relief Printing

Day + date: Wednesday evenings, 6 August Ð 24 September

Interested in trying printmaking but not sure which medium is for you? Then why not enrol in the Megalo Print Sampler and sample three print techniques in the one course! Students will be introduced to screenprinting on fabric, relief printing using lino and creating an etching using a copper plate. A great stepping stone to one of MegaloÕs extended introductory courses in Term 4. Course fee includes all materials.

Etching Classes Tuesday Etching Group (all levels) with Nicci Haynes

Day + date: Tuesday mornings 10am Ð 1pm, 5 August Ð 23 September

This is a class for all levels of etching experience. Students will be guided through image development using a variety of materials and approaches, and experimentation is encouraged! Guidance will be given to those unfamiliar with studio use, press handling and paper preparation. Bring along anything that inspires you Ð notebooks, photographs, objects, and drawings. Fee includes basic materials.

Solar Plate Etching with Seraphina Martin

Day + date: Weekend Workshop, 16 Ð 17 August

Join well-known printmaker Seraphina Martin for this stimulating solar plate and viscosity printing workshop to produce colourful prints using non-toxic methods which allow you to create the solar plates in the comfort of the home environment. Solar plate etching is a quick, simple and safe alternative to traditional etching. Rather than acids, all that is needed is the UV rays of the sun to etch a plate. Seraphina will also introduce participants to viscosity printing, a technique where oil is mixed with coloured inks, creating multi-layered effects of on a plate. Fee includes essential materials.

Intermediate Level Etching (Thursday) with Barak Zelig

This class is suited to those who have completed an introductory level etching course and are interested in continuing with some more extended projects. The course will introduce and extend upon a variety of techniques and build confidence with the etching processes. Good technical, printing and editioning methods will be encouraged as well as time spent on image development and composition.

Advanced Etching Group (Tuesday) with Barak Zelig

The Advanced Etching Group is a class for continuing students or those who have completed a number of terms at intermediate level and who wish to develop a more complex project using a combination of techniques. Many students in this class will be continuing their etching projects from the previous term and limited places will be offered for experienced students to join the class.

Lithography

Introduction to Lithography with Surya Bajracharya

Day + date: Tuesdays 6-9pm, 30 July Ð 2 September

A six-week introduction to the fascinating printing technique of lithography. Working on lithographic stones, participants will use specialised materials to create and etch their images which can then be printed. Great for anyone with a love of drawing or painting. Course fee covers basic materials.

Relief printing

Woodblock Ð an exploratory approach with John Pratt (all levels)

Day + date: Weekend Workshop 10am Ð 4pm, 30 + 31 August

The woodcut is renowned for its bold and dramatic presence Ð the relatively direct approach to the medium however is rich with possibilities in terms of generating a range of responses to a particular image, theme or set of ideas. This weekend workshop will explore a range of approaches to both cutting and printing including stenciling, jigsaw, chine collŽ and monoprint. The course is suitable for beginners as well as those with some experience in the medium.

Lino Printing on Fabric with Mary-Lou Nugent (all levels)

Day + date: Tuesday evenings 6-9pm, 2 Ð 23 September

Explore the exciting possibilities of creating repeat designs on fabric using hand carved lino blocks. The first part of the workshop involves re-creating your design with traditional cutting tools onto reinforced lino squares. Participants will print these as placement or scatter prints, or use an all-over regular repeat approach for complete coverage. We will also employ other techniques such as hand-painting and background colouring and might even attempt a group project!

Bookmaking

Print to Book - Bookmaking with Caren Florence

Day + date: Saturday 10am Ð 5pm, 13 September

A one-day workshop exploring various methods of converting prints to artist book formats. A wonderful way to transform proofs and misprints, or to develop a distinct body of work within your print practice. Participants are encouraged to bring their own prints (or colour photocopies of good prints) to play with, and/or they can work with blank paper (provided) to create maquettes for later reference. Caren Florance is a letterpress printer and designer who teaches Book Arts at the ANU School of Art.

Screenprinting

Introduction to Screenprinting on Fabric I with Linda Rice

Day + date: Wednesday evenings 6-9pm, 30 July Ð 3 September

This course provides a comprehensive six-week introduction to screenprinting on fabric beginning with direct stencils techniques that are achievable in home studios, including wax resist and paper stencils. Photographic stencil processes will also be introduced and students will become familiar with using MegaloÕs equipment and safe working practices. Course fee includes essential materials.

Introduction to Screenprinting on Fabric with Sarah Walker

An exciting, three-day introduction to screenprinting on fabric, starting with simple stencil techniques to produce a range of printed images and patterns on fabric. Students will become familiar with stencil preparation, printing methods and use of MegaloÕs fabric printing equipment and facilities. Course fee includes essential materials.

Introduction to Screenprinting on Paper with Richard Blackwell

Day + date: Monday evenings 6-9pm, 28 July Ð 18 August

Course fees: Members $380, non-members* $429, non-member concession$ $408

Become familiar with the screenprinting process and a range of stencil techniques including the use of photographic emulsion to produce multi-coloured screenprints on paper. Students are asked to bring photographs, digital images, photocopies, notebooks etc as the starting point for their prints. No drawing skills necessary! Fee includes all basic materials.

Toning Up Ð Introduction to Photoshop + Screenprinting with Erica Seccombe (all levels)

Day + date: two weekends 10am Ð 4pm, 30 Ð 31 August & 6 Ð 7 September

Screenprinting is a satisfyingly, efficient and fun way to make multiple prints, FAST! Over two weekends, students will be introduced developing tonal stencils using Adobe Photoshop which will be used to screenprint on paper. More advanced students will learn new technical tricks.

Participants will be introduced to the basics of screenprinting single and multi-coloured images onto paper, including ink and paper selection and the safe use of printmaking equipment. Students will also be introduced to image registration incorporating both photographic and direct stencil techniques to explore this fast and versatile print medium.

Screenprinting T-shirts + posters with Richard Blackwell

Day + date: Saturdays 10am Ð 4pm, 6 Ð 27 September

An introduction to simple screenprinting aimed at the production of t-shirts and posters. This course is suitable for all levels and will cover preparation of photographic stencils and printing using fabric and paper printing inks. Artwork for photo stencils can be developed from drawings, computer printouts and photocopies to enable the transfer of fine, detailed images onto paper and/or fabric. Course fee covers screen preparation, paper and inks Ð BYO t-shirts!

Classes for young printmakers

Inky Tales Ð telling stories with printmaking (9-12 years) with Antonia Aitken

Day + date: Tuesday afternoons 4-6pm, 21 October Ð 9 December

Course fees: $245 (8 weeks)

These Tuesday after school sessions with Antonia Aitken will be a fun, messy and playful introduction to the world of printmaking. Using simple relief and intaglio processes, such as lino-cutting, mono-printing and contact printing, we will explore image-making inspired by stories from far off lands and tales from our own backyards. This workshop will be a chance to share your favourite stories, get your hands dirty, draw, print and make new friends.

Etching

Advanced Etching Group (Tuesday) with Barak Zelig

Day + date: Tuesday evenings 6.30 Ð 9.30pm, 14 October Ð 2 December

The Advanced Etching Group is a class for continuing students or those who have completed a number of terms at intermediate level and who wish to develop a more complex project using a combination of techniques. Experimental Colour Etching Ð intermediate with Heather Burness

Day + date: Three Sundays 10am Ð 4pm, 23 November Ð 7 December

Over three Sundays, challenge yourself with the possibilities of colour etching with Heather Burness. This class is suitable for intermediate to advanced etchers, and great for students who have completed a number of etching classes and would like to explore new possibilities with their work. Relief printing

Introduction to Woodblock Printing with Julian Laffan

Day + date: Monday evenings 6 Ð 9pm, 13 October Ð 1 December

An introduction to the creative possibilities of wood block printing, using traditional cutting tools and other implements. The workshop is suitable for beginners and does not require drawing skills. Students will be provided with instruction on block cutting, and printing using the press and hand printing techniques. Fee includes all materials and paper.

Monoprinting + Relief Printing - Intermediate

Day + date: Wednesday evenings 6-9pm, 22 October Ð 10 December

Explore the possibilities of mono and relief printing using wood, lino and other printing surfaces. This class requires some experience with relief printing and block cutting. Course fee includes basic materials.

Lithography

Hands On Lithography I (all levels) with Barak Zelig

Day + date: Wednesday evenings 6-9pm, 15 October Ð 3 December

This class will introduce lithography in a simple and easy way guiding students through all the necessary skills to print images from lithographic stones with a strong emphasis on drawing. A variety of drawing and mark-making techniques will be explored. All materials will be provided and the class is open to beginners as well as those who are returning to lithography.

Hands On Lithography II (all levels) with Barak Zelig

Day + date: Saturday afternoons 4.30 Ð 7.30pm, 4 October Ð 6 December

This class is suitable for students with some experience of lithography, as well as being offered as an extension for those students who are enrolled in Hands on Lithography I. There will be an emphasis on exploring an extended range of techniques including image transfer, accurate registration and correct editioning practices. All materials will be provided.

Textile surface design

Shibori Weekend Workshop with Jill Pettifer

Day + date: Weekend 10am-4pm, 18 Ð 19 October

Shibori is a Japanese term for the process of dyeing cloth with a pattern by binding, stitching, folding, twisting, or compression, each method used resulting in a very different pattern. This weekend workshop will introduce the fascinating and ancient technique of shibori and allow participants to experiment with a number of different binding techniques.

Screenprinting

This course introduces the essential elements of fabric printing. Participants are taught how to work with direct stencils, prepare photographic stencils and print from screen using fabric printing inks. Artwork for photo stencils can be developed from drawings, computer printouts and photocopies to enable the transfer of fine, detailed images onto fabric. Course fee covers all equipment and materials excluding fabric.

Screenprinting on Fabric - Intermediate with Linda Rice

This course is designed to follow Introduction to Screenprinting on Fabric or for those with previous fabric screenprinting experience. It will focus on photographic stencils and registration techniques for t-shirts or small fabric lengths. The course will also cover an introduction to two colour separation processes, and registration techniques for the t-shirt carousel and fabric table. Course fee includes all basic materials.

Digital studio

Introduction to Photoshop with Kirrily Schell

Day + date: Four day workshop Saturday to Tuesday 10am Ð 4pm, 1 Ð 4 November

Course fees: Members $430, non-members* $474, non-member concession$ $385

An introductory workshop designed for artists investigating the use of Photoshop as a creative tool. It will will introduce the language of Photoshop, its tools and the endless possibilities it can offer cover including the use of layers and arranging digital compositions.

Photoshop - intermediate with Kirrily Schell

Day + date: Weekend workshop 10am Ð 4pm, 8 Ð 9 November

Course fees: Members $230, non-members* $279, non-member concession$ $258

This weekend workshop can be taken as an extension to the Introduction to Photoshop class, or by artists who have some experience of Photoshop and who would like to extend their skills and knowledge.

Flash Animation Summer School with Kirrily Schell

Day + date: Thursday to Sunday 10am Ð 4pm, 29 January Ð 1 February 2009

A four-day intensive to introduce participants to digital animation techniques and their application as a creative tool. It will also allow artists to explore the use of time-based media in their artwork.
