L U C I D U S is a collection of vibrant woodblock prints by Ellie Malin, exploring abstract images through colour, texture and form laid out in a series of contrasting configurations.
Ellie Malin is a print media artist based in Melbourne. Her bold artworks reflect a playful approach to image making where bright colours and form construct the landscape. Thematically Ellie frequently draws on her childhood experiences living abroad, and explores the effect these have had on her cultural identity. Her artworks and patterns are inspired by a love for travel, childhood memories, and also from the most meaningful to the insignificant moments in life, in all their beauty. Travelling between continents as a child enthused her appreciation for art and design being acutely aware of the differences between cities with their distinct cultural diversities, architecture (new versus the old) and natural geographic surroundings. These themes have continued to influence Ellie’s art practice, where images are constructed through an exploration of shape, colour and form. This exhibition is a suite of woodblocks one of her favourite printmaking methods.
“An image’s origins may begin as something quite recognisable as I slowly take on a process of deconstructing it into pure simplified shapes and colour. In effect I’m pulling things apart in order to simplify their appearance”.
