big stones is an exhibition of lithographs and drawings by Surya Bajracharya. The prints are the result of a mentorship with artist and printer John Loane. The mentorship was funded by the Regional Arts Fund, Southern Tablelands Arts and ArtsACT as part of an initiative to encourage regional artists to work with with Key Arts Organisations in the ACT. The grant allowed Surya and John to access Megalo’s Lithography Studio for six-weeks and develop two, six-colour lithographs. These images have been developed from photographs taken in Kathmandu on a return trip to visit Surya’s family and investigate notions of memory, transience and the photograph. The mentorship opportunity allowed Surya to explore the colour lithography process which he had not previously experimented with in his art practice. This exhibition gives the viewer a rare glimpse of the various stages of the colour lithography process, whilst experiencing Surya’s sensitive and evocative use of the photographic image and drawn mark.
