Leo Loomans 2009

Time and Tide is an exhibition of linocuts and sculptures by Leo Loomans. The work on exhibition is the result of a Visiting Fellowship at Jane Franklin Hall at the University of Tasmania Loomans completed in 2008. Jane Franklin Hall is situated in the hills of South Hobart with an elevated view of the Derwent River and harbour. These proved a rich source of imagery for the prints and sculptures on exhibition in Time and Tide. Images of boats emerge from the works, residing within a complex web of lines and carefully constructed positive and negative space.  Looman's prints echo the forms and structures of his steel sculptures, which are constructed from found scrap metal which is welded together to create new forms.

The artists states, 'Both the scrap steel I use in the welded steel sculptures and the gestural marks that I first lay down onto the lino are treated as the same raw material.' By constructing line, form and space in both steel and lino, Loomans explores complex emotions evoked by the everyday human experience.
