WHEN : Saturday + Sunday
7 + 8 July 2018

TIME : 10am to 4pm
COST : Members $310
Non-members $370

Explore the versatility of printing with photopolymer plates. Relief and intaglio processes will be covered. This technique offers a safe alternative to etching plates with acids. Create a relief plate from hand-drawn images or you can use found materials such as lace, mesh, or dried plants to create a plate. We will make drawings on drafting film to create intaglio plates. You can use drawings or photographs under the drafting film to make a line and tone drawing with pencils.

During this workshop you will create two plates, one will be processed to print in relief, the other, with different processing will be inked and printed intaglio. You will learn how to ascertain the correct exposure for your plates, and how to process the plates to create durable printing plates. You will also learn how to ink and print onto dampened paper, and a small edition can be made time permitting.

Price of workshop includes all materials.

Non-members Conc $439

The course is a fantastic introduction to what Megalo has to offer! Through this 6 session class you will be guided through the processes of relief printing, screen printing + etching.

RELIEF PRINTING: The lino print is made by cutting and chiselling the surface of the lino to create light or white areas. Ink is applied using a roller to the surface of the block. Paper is laid onto the surface and printed through a press or by hand using a baren.

SCREEN PRINT: Using hand-cut or photographic stencils on a stretched mesh screen, ink is passed through the stencil using a squeegee. The ink is finely layered onto the surface of fabric, paper or other surface.

ETCHING: A type of intaglio printmaking. Lines and marks are acid etched into the surface of a copper or zinc plate to create grooves that hold ink for printing. Ink is pushed into the grooves using tarlatan (starched muslin) and then the surface of the plate is wiped clean with tissue. Dampened paper is laid onto the plate and run through a press at high pressure. The ink is transferred to the paper leaving a positive image.

This two-day, hands on workshop exploring the art of wood engraving is suitable for beginners or those with some prior printmaking experience who want to explore a new technique.

Wood engraving is a form of relief print that enables the creation of highly detailed, yet graphic images, usually on a small scale. Prints can be produced without a press and using only a small number of specialised tools, so it is suitable for those without a large studio space or budget.

This workshop will cover all aspects of wood engraving including: history of the medium with examples to see; image design; printing block preparation; correct use of engraving tools to create an image; and printing.

Unlike other printmaking techniques the resulting image is a 'one off' that cannot be repeated. Best known for rich tones and spontaneous mark making, monotype is an easy to explore medium.
