WOOD ENGRAVING WORKSHOP

TUTOR : Peter McLean
WHEN : Saturday + Sunday
23 + 24 March 2019
TIME : 10am to 4pm
COST : Members $280
Non-members $340
Non-members Conc $320

This two-day, hands on workshop exploring the art of wood engraving is suitable for beginners or those with some prior printmaking experience who want to explore a new technique.

Wood engraving is a form of relief print that enables the creation of highly detailed, yet graphic images, usually on a small scale. Prints can be produced without a press and using only a small number of specialised tools, so it is suitable for those without a large studio space or budget.

This workshop will cover all aspects of wood engraving including: history of the medium with examples to see; image design; printing block preparation; correct use of engraving tools to create an image; and printing.

ABOUT THE TUTOR
Peter McLean is a Canberra based artist with a deep affinity for nature and the environment.  Working across a range of printmaking techniques, his work explores our physical, emotional and spiritual relationships with place.

CMYK is a screen printing process used to turn photographic imagery into a hand printed artwork. The process involves creating four digital stencils, Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Key Black that are then layered over the top of one another to create a wide range of colours true to the image.

The CMYK process is a great way to extend on a basic knowledge of screen printing and several different ways to approach this technique will be explored in this class. You will be introduced to the digital technique of creating stencils using Photoshop. You will learn how to expose them to a screen and register each print to create your final image.

This course requires you to have a working knowledge of screen printing.

ABOUT THE TUTOR
Estelle Briedis is a Canberra based surface designer and screen printer who specialises in creating original surface designs, exploring ideas of architectural geometry, the mathematical process of tessellation and the aesthetics of symmetry. TIME : 10 - 1pm
COST : Members $399

The course is a fantastic introduction to what Megalo has to offer! Through this 6 session class you will be guided through the processes of relief printing, screen printing + etching.

RELIEF PRINTING: The lino print is made by cutting and chiselling the surface of the lino to create light or white areas. Ink is applied using a roller to the surface of the block. Paper is laid onto the surface and printed through a press or by hand using a baren.

SCREEN PRINT: Using hand-cut or photographic stencils on a stretched mesh screen, ink is passed through the stencil using a squeegee. The ink is finely layered onto the surface of fabric, paper or other surface.

ETCHING: A type of intaglio printmaking. Lines and marks are acid etched into the surface of a copper or zinc plate to create grooves that hold ink for printing. Ink is pushed into the grooves using tarlatan (starched muslin) and then the surface of the plate is wiped clean with tissue. Dampened paper is laid onto the plate and run through a press at high pressure. The ink is transferred to the paper leaving a positive image.

mehdi_open day_2018.jpg

Mezzotint is an intaglio drypoint printmaking process. Prints created using the mezzotint technique can demonstrate incredible tonality and richness. To achieve this effect artists use a 'rocker' (a metal tool that has small teeth) on a metal substrate which can create thousands of little dots on the surface of the plate. These tiny pits in the surface hold ink in the plate enabling a richer impression upon the paper as it comes through the press.

Enjoy a creative weekend with printmaker Seraphina Martin.

In this hands-on two-day workshop, Seraphina will teach you simple techniques used in solar plate etching. Using UV rays from the sun, solar plate etching is a quick, simple and non-toxic printmaking technique.

You will create an image using drawings, photographs or collage, then photocopy your final composition onto acetate film. This print will be exposed onto a photosensitive photo-polymer plate, ready for printing on the etching press. Viscosity inks on rollers will allow for some exquisite colour variations towards a stunning print portfolio.

Price of workshop includes all materials.

Often referred to as painterly printmaking, monotype is a type of print made by drawing or painting with ink on a smooth surface. The image is then transferred to paper using a press.

Unlike other printmaking techniques the resulting image is a 'one off' that cannot be repeated. Best known for rich tones and spontaneous mark making, monotype is an easy to explore medium.

No previous printmaking experience required.

Please note that studio cleaning is an important part of each class and each student will be taught the correct procedure.
