MEGALO artist in residence 2026
Megalo’s artist-in-residence program is the only printmaking residency of its kind in Australia. Through an annual callout, this program gives artists a unique opportunity to access Megalo Print Studio - Australia’s largest printmaking studio - to experiment with ideas and make new work.
The Artist in Residence program gives time and space for artists to work in the Megalo studio environment, free from any specified outcomes.
Applications for 2026 close 31st October 2025 at midnight.
About the Residency Program
Megalo’s residency program is a supported opportunity open to artists at all stages of their careers. We aim to support the making of new work that meets Megalo’s objectives of excellence and innovation in printmaking.
The selected artists will receive an artist stipend, materials allowance, and full access to Megalo’s comprehensive professional printmaking facilities.
Artists from outside the Kamberri (Canberra) region will also receive shared accommodation at Cargill’s Cottage.
How to Apply
Megalo offers the following opportunities:
- Three national residencies for artists currently residing in Australia and Torres Strait Islands, including at least one residency reserved for artists of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent.
- One international residency for an artist living outside Australia and Torres Strait Islands
Please read through the guidelines and FAQs below before completing the Application Form.
GUIDELINES
-
Applicants to the residency program should not be enrolled in undergraduate studies (including undergraduate honours) in the year of the residency.
The residency program aims for a balance of disciplines, media, and experience: please ensure your application clearly demonstrates your level and area/s of experience in print media and other relevant disciplines.
If you have previously undertaken a Megalo residency, you are welcome to reapply; however please note this in your CV to assist in the selection process.
Joint applications (for up to two participant artists) will be accepted; however only one stipend will be awarded and both participants must undertake the residency at the same time.
-
All application forms must be submitted online, together with 4-7 images indicative of your practice in a single PDF and a one-page CV.
Please use high-res, good quality images in good light to best showcase your practice. Max 10mb
Your file should be named 'Surname_Firstname_artworks' eg. Frankenthaler_Helen_artworks
You will also be asked to describe your project, why you would like to come to Megalo and/or Kamberri/Canberra.
You will also be asked to outline any previous printmaking experience, however this is purely to assist in understanding your project within the context of your arts practice and if support will be required -there is no requirement for you to have any previous printmaking experience.
-
All applications will be assessed by a panel of expert peers, who will be looking at the strength of your proposal and examples of your work provided to determine artistic merit. They will also look at the potential impact and benefits of the residency on the applicant’s practice.
-
Megalo residents in 2026 will also receive free membership with Photo Access, the ACT and region’s centre for contemporary photography, film and video and media arts. Residents will receive access to Photo Access’ film developing, darkroom and digital making spaces, support and mentorship from Photo Access staff and reduced rates on a wide variety of artist and photographer led workshops.
It is not compulsory that your project aligns with the Photo Access Partnership or uses photographic media in any way.
-
Participating artists will be requested to contribute a representative sample of work produced during the residency to the Megalo archive. The archive collection is used for the purposes of exhibition and scholarly research. Artists may also be asked to present and discuss their work at a public forum. Megalo will hold the right to reproduce work made by residents for future promotion of Megalo programs but will in all such instances fully acknowledge the artist as the maker of the work.
-
Residents from outside the Canberra region will be provided with free, shared accommodation in Cargill's Cottage, a heritage-listed building close to our studios. The dwelling was constructed in 1927 as housing for one of ten dairy farms in the area. The property has a live-in caretaker and two bedrooms for artist stays. The cottage is close to many amenities such as shops, markets and nature walks.
-
Megalo understands the importance of opportunities for artist parents and caregivers. We aim to provide flexible arrangements wherever possible, and we encourage parents and caregivers to apply for our residency program. If you require dependents or partners to stay with you during all or part of your residency, we can assess this on a case-by-case basis.
Please note that our cottage accommodation cannot always be guaranteed and is shared with a live-in caretaker (and occasionally other artists). That said, we have hosted families in the past who have found the experience enjoyable and rewarding. If you would like to discuss this option further, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
