STONE LITHOGRAPHY intensive

with John Hart
10am - 3pm 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 August and 6 September 2025

Join artist John Hart as he introduces you to the fascinating process of stone lithography, a medium that supports a wide range of drawing styles, from detailed illustration to spontaneous mark-making.

Lithography is based on the principle that grease and water don’t mix. An image is created on the surface of a limestone using greasy drawing materials such as crayon, pencil, or a liquid called tusche. When the stone is ready for printing, the surface is dampened, inked with greasy litho ink, and then printed.

Over this 6-week intensive, you'll complete the stone lithography process from start to finish multiple times. Beginning with a fresh stone, you'll draw and process your image, print your edition, then remove your drawing from the stone to start again. Working through the process multiple times on the same stone, you'll develop a strong understanding of the material and build confidence at each stage.

As your skills progress, you’ll also be introduced to printing with coloured inks and the principles of registration, allowing you to experiment with layering and refine your technique for creating precise, multi-colour images.

In this course, you’ll get to know the full rhythm of the medium as you move through each step: drawing, processing, printing, re-graining, and printing again using Megalo’s lithography presses.
