Helio Press: Ten Trips Around The Sun
Exhibition dates: 11 April - 23 May
Opening event: Friday 17 April 5:30pm - 7:30pm
A selection of works produced for various artists by Helio Press.
Printer: Ashley Ronning
Ten Trips Around the Sun celebrates a kaleidoscope of work produced by Naarm-based Helio Press, specialising in illustrative risograph printing and DIY publishing. Helio is owned and operated by Melbourne artist Ashley Ronning, who has dedicated her practice to showcasing/capturing the fluid and abstract stories and experiences of authors and illustrators via the process of committing ink to paper.
This rediscovered printing process centred around Japanese Riso photocopiers reached its peak in the 1980s, and now moving into its second decade of resurgence. Located in Melbourne’s inner north – three planets from the sun – it’s the home of free range, physical art; hand-stapled by the owner of an expansive collection of inky denim.
Like a constellation assembled over time, the exhibition brings together pieces printed for hundreds of artists, each one a point of light marking a moment in Helio’s journey through the creative cosmos. Alongside a vast array of art prints, zines, and other printed ephemera, visitors can explore proofs, test sheets, notes, and studio fragments reconstituted in the gallery space.
Design and print your own ephemera/?? Over the course of the exhibition, Ashley will also be running a workshop where you can explore the marvellous world of riso.
