About the artist
Tisna Sanjaya’s artworks (etchings, paintings, installations), performances and social situations, are unwavering in their attention to the political and environmental conditions in his home city of Bandung in West Java and the world at large. Tisna positions the artist as a shape shifter or storyteller who can adopt roles traditionally assigned to community leaders in Sundanese culture. The vast scope and ambiguity of Tisna’s artistic disciplines engages diverse audiences from a local street corner performance to major gallery installations.
Dr Elly Kent is a researcher, lecturer and artist with over two decades experience in academia and the arts in Indonesia and Australia. Elly teaches Indonesian language and researches Southeast Asian art at the Australian National University. She is the author of Artists and the People: Ideologies of Art in Indonesia (2022, NUS Press) and co-editor/author of Living Art: Indonesian Artists Engage Politics, Society and History (2022, ANU Press). Elly’s research looks at the nexus between art, artists and social change.
