STONE LITHOGRAPHY - Low Tox
with Millie Mitchell
5:30-9pm Friday 22, 10-3pm Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 May 2026
Photo taken by Jennifer Brady.
Stone lithography is a versatile print medium allowing artists to reproduce a range of tonal marks - from illustrative drawing to intuitive brushstrokes and photographic transfers. Based on the principle that grease and water don’t mix, the surface of the stone is chemically manipulated to strategically attract ink to positive image areas, and reject ink in negative space.
Over the course of this weekend intensive, Eora-based artist Millie Mitchell will introduce the subtleties of lithographic images, experimenting with crayons and image transfer techniques. You will be guided through the chemical process of etching with tannic acid, a low-hazard, low-toxic alternative to traditional nitric acid. Finally you will learn to edition your own lithographs, including registration.
