WOODCUT workshop

Join artist John Pratt exploring the popular relief printing technique of woodcut.

This weekend workshop will explore a range of approaches to the medium with a particular focus on low technology engagement enabling participants to continue their practice in their own domestic context or studio. As part of this exploration approaches to colour will also be considered with a focus on reduction cuts, jigsaw and hand colouring.

Themes and subject matter will range from Still Life, Natural elements and portraiture as well as contributions from the participants themselves – these objects and genres will provide the focus for each of these investigations. You will learn how to carve an image into the block, prepare inks for printing, ink your block and run it through the Megalo presses to create your prints.

Suitability: The workshop is suitable for all levels of experience.
Materials: Please bring a drawing, photo, or other ideas for your image. All other materials provided.

ABOUT THE TUTOR
John Pratt is a graphic artist working across a range of media including printmaking, drawing, collage, artist’s books and projections in public space. Through a series of exhibitions he has been exploring the impact of human presence within a range of natural landscapes and constructed environments. These landscapes or sites range from Natural Parks in the ACT to Southern Coastal Zones through suburbia to the streetscapes of the CBD. In each case the focus has explored the interchange of our existence and the physical space that surrounds us. This current work extends that focus further and explores our engagement with media and the digital world.
